Mission Statement
“This
Swimming Club is a friendly club run entirely by volunteers for the
benefit of its members, and seeks to provide:
High
quality tuition in the core skills of swimming and stroke development,
water safety and life saving.
This it will
do in a safe environment, whilst making learning a fun process and
maximising the potential of its members in their chosen disciplines. In
doing so, it will treat everyone equally within the context of its
activity. This shall be regardless for example of sex, ethnic origin,
religion, disability or political persuasion, on any grounds. In
pursuance of this, the club shall implement the ASA Equal Opportunities
Policy. It shall also comply with the ASA laws on Child Protection
Procedures, and insist on its members doing likewise.”
History
The Club was
founded in 1946, at the original site in Warren Farm Road, Kingstanding.
We now use the facilities at Kingstanding Leisure Centre in Dulwich
Road, Kingstanding. We meet on Thursday evenings from 6.15 pm until 9.00
pm, for 46 weeks per year. (See “Location” on menu on left for map
showing location.)
Structure
The Club
consists of officers, committee, helpers and members. We currently have
13 fully qualified swimming and life saving teachers associated with the
club. All who help in the running of the club and in the teaching
process are volunteers. A full list of current officers appears in the
Who’s Who section. (See menu on left.)
We have
classes to suit all abilities and ages, from parent and baby, through
early development, to advance swimmer. We also cater for older swimmers
who simply want a social swim in quiet, safe conditions. Training for
RLSS lifesaving badges and the National Pool Lifequard Qualification is
also structured, and includes tuition from RLSS trainer/assessors.
Achievements
In 2003, we
became the first Swimming Club in Birmingham to attain Swim21
accreditation. Swim21 is the national recognition for good practice
within, and management of swimming clubs. We achieved re-accreditation
in May 2007.
In 2006 we
attained approved training site status for the Royal Life Saving
Society, and repeated this achievement in 2007 at the follow up
assessment. This means we are able to train and examine swimmers for all
of the RLSS awards, including the National Pool Lifeguard award. We have
three RLSS Trainer/Assessors associated with the club.
